Avoiding Viruses in IM Messages

Computer viruses are not limited to files hidden in e-mail messages. It is also possible to contract a virus through instant messaging (IM). Fortunately, you can protect yourself at home or at work by taking some basic precautions.

* Do not open, accept or download files in IM from someone you don't recognize. Even if you supposedly know the other party, verify his or her identity and the fact that you have received the download. Contact the person-preferably by phone-to confirm what was sent.

* Install updates in Windows software. Don't ignore automatic updates that have been provided to you-if you don't use them, they can't do you any good.

* Use the latest version of IM software that is available. This can help protect you against computer viruses and spyware.

* Install antivirus software. Not only will this help detect and remove IM viruses from your personal computer (PC), the antivirus software may actually update itself when you connect to the Internet.

* Use antispyware software. Some IM viruses may install spyware or other unwanted software on your PC. Antispyware software, which is readily available, is generally the best protection you can obtain for this occurrence.

Above all, be suspicious. The potential damages you may suffer from a computer virus warrant a healthy degree of skepticism, whether you are corresponding via IM or regular e mail.
